Kemper Tea coming up

Inside the doorway, you’re greeted by a warm smile and a friendly “Welcome to the Kemper Residence.”

There’s music in the air, along with happy talk, as you take in the beauty of the historic home where James Lawson Kemper, Civil War general and former Virginia governor, and his wife, Belle, once lived.

The aroma of freshly brewed tea wafts through the rooms where tables are waiting for guests to be served helpings of delicious savories, sweets and fruit treats.

This is the setting for the Spring Tea on Wednesday, March 25, sponsored by the Madison County Historical Society as a benefit for the Kemper Residence.

Highland Scones are a standard fare, as are Belle Kemper’s cheese wafers, made from a family recipe. Other delicious offerings include miniature turkey sandwiches, a variety of tarts and canapes, and Kemper brownies, accompanied by aromatic teas. All of the food is prepared in Madison County kitchens, so you know it will be pleasing to the palate.

This popular mid-day dining experience can be yours for only $18. Since all the food is donated and served by a group of dedicated volunteers, all proceeds go to the Kemper Residence for a kitchen renovation project and other good uses. Packages of tea, historical ornaments and other items will be available for purchase.

There is limited seating, so it is necessary to make a reservation. Call (540) 547-4398 and give your name, telephone number and how many are in your party. Spouses and other guests are welcome, and small groups can be accommodated.

Make your plans now to enjoy the March 25 Spring Tea at the Kemper Residence. It’s a wonderful way to welcome spring!
