    Hundreds expected for tour

SYRIA -- The 2012 Tour de Madison is set for 8:30 a.m. this Saturday. It will both start and finish this year at Graves Mountain Lodge – in the area of the Sycamore Pavilion. This is the first time ever for a Syria start-to-finish for the event.

  • Tour has repeat riders

SYRIA -- There will be many familiar faces Saturday at the 2012 Tour de Madison, an event that started with a simple idea by Plow and Hearth founder Peter Rice Sr. and his friends 25 years ago.

  • Tour sign-up time nears

SYRIA -- The 25th annual Tour de Madison has some special perks to offer up besides a beautiful group bike ride through scenic Madison County. A special meal and free concert will be dished up after the ride that starts and finishes at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria on May 19.

  • Win No. 10 for softball squad

FALLS CHURCH -- Madison County’s softball team knocked out another district opponent last Friday in an away game against George Mason. Madison got the ball rolling when Anna Kelliher’s hit to centerfield was enough to bring Timberly Deane in from second base and score the run.

  • Wheeler wows MC soccer fans

RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY -- Madison County’s girls soccer team traveled to Rappahannock County to take on the Panther girls Friday. The game opened with Maria Rincon intercepting a Panther girl pass and sending it to an open Leanna Coates. The Lady Mountaineers controlled the ball throughout the first half as they took 12 shots on goal with two of the shots ending in scores.

FALLS CHURCH -- Madison County’s softball team knocked out another district opponent last Friday in an away game against George Mason. Madison got the ball rolling when Anna Kelliher’s hit to centerfield was enough to bring Timberly Deane in from second base and score the run.

  • MC bats bury Manassas Park

Coming off a 20-1 win over Strasburg, Madison County’s softball team looked to grab its fourth straight win, and seventh of the season, against Manassas Park at home last Friday.

  • Baseball team gets third win

Madison County’s baseball team brought home another victory last Tuesday, this one over first-time opponent Central Woodstock, 6-5. The Madison offense had just five hits throughout the game, but capitalized on 12 walks by the Falcons’ pitching staff to gain base runners. Their six runs proved just enough to hold off Central and get the win.

  • MC soccer boys seek win

MADISON -- After being defeated twice by AA opponent Brentsville, Madison County’s boys soccer team was excited to start district play. The district season began at home for the Mountaineers with a matchup against Clarke County on March 27. Madison’s primary objective for the game was to prevent an early goal against them.

  • MC soccer boys speed good

For Madison, Martens believes the team has better speed. “We have straight ahead speed but we don’t have the shiftiness or agility yet,” said Martens.

  • MC soccer girls shine

MADISON -- Just a glance at the Madison County girls soccer squad's roster elicits optimism. That’s because many of the names are familiar, and many of the players are upperclassmen, including 12 seniors and five juniors.

  • Baseball team taps strength

MADISON -- Last week marked the start of Madison County’s baseball season, but the team has been at it since early winter, hitting the weight room twice a week and taking regular batting practice. Changes to the Virginia High School League rules now allow out-of-season practice, and new Head Coach David Londrey took full advantage. “The best part has been seeing them realize that they really are getting stronger from week to week,” said Londrey, “and now that we’re in season, it will pay off on the field.”

BRIGHTWOOD -- Planning is in full swing for the 25th annual Tour de Madison bike ride scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 19. The planning committee reports it has been working hard to make this milestone year a special one.

  • Softball squad seeks crown

The Madison County High School softball team is looking to win the state championship this year. Last year, with a record of 22-5 overall, the Mountaineer girls made it to the state semi-finals and lost 1-0 to Bath County. They easily captured the Bull Run District championship and were regional runners-up. This year, the young team is ready to create some more wins.

  • Obstacle race coming up

MADISON -- Malvern resident Valerie Miller is a busy mother of two, but she finds the time to help raise money for a new playground at Madison Primary School. The former athletic trainer is using her skills to volunteer for the Leprechaun Launch 5K obstacle race March 17 at the Hoover Ridge athletic fields behind Madison Primary School. The cost is $35 to participate in the 3.1 mile event and all the proceeds will go to building a new playground at the primary school. Children get in free. The children’s event begins at 8 a.m. and the estimated start time for the 5K is 8:30 a.m. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

  • MC athletes issued challenge

MADISON -- After attending last Sunday’s Winter Athletic Awards Program, I am convinced that Madison County High School’s Director of Activities Phil Warren is a master of capturing the moment. While he kept his opening remarks brief, because a hearty meal was to precede the event, he spent more time delivering his closing remarks that included quality moments exhorting the school’s athletes to strive to get better.

  • MC hoop boys finish 15-10

After being knocked out of the Bull Run District tournament on Feb. 14, Madison County’s boys basketball team was selected as the fifth seed in the Region B, Division One tournament. This placement earned the Mountaineers a trip to Page County to take on the Panthers, who were the number four seed. Madison was well-rested as it had a week off and took on the Panthers on Feb. 21.

  • Anthony Jewett third in state

At last weekend’s Group A state wrestling tournament in Salem, Madison County’s Anthony Jewett and Buffalo Gap’s Zac Richey appeared destined to meet again in the championship finals at 160 pounds -- just like they had the year before. The stage for a sequel was all but set; all that needed to happen was for both to win their respective state semifinal matches to guarantee a second act.

  • Taking Bull Run by horns

When every team makes the playoffs, as is true in the Bull Run District, it is easy for teams to look past their final regular season game and not play their best. When the Madison County High School varsity boys basketball team traveled to Clarke County on Feb. 7, the exact opposite happened. Madison went to Clarke and played arguably its best game of the season.

  • MC boys hoops intense

With only three games left in regular season play, every game is incredibly important and has postseason implications. Madison County’s boys basketball team entered the week with an 11-8 record, looking for two district wins to improve its postseason resume. The Mountaineers began the week by traveling to Strasburg to take on the Rams on Feb. 1.

  • Madison mat men break jinx

Thanks to the 6 scored by Jacob Welch (120), Madison was declared the winner and finally broke the jinx called criteria.

  • MC swimmers eye district meet

The Madison County Mountaineer swim team hosted a Jan. 14 meet at Manassas Park, where it competed with George Mason and Strasburg. Overall, the girls scores were George Mason, 63, and Madison, 30, and vs. Strasburg, 51, and Madison, 42. The boys swim team scores were George Mason, 78, and Madison, 15, and vs. Strasburg, 45, and Madison, 40.

  • Last MC home mat event Saturday

This Saturday’s “Mountaineer Classic” is a last chance in more ways than one. It’s the last event of the regular season and it’s the last time the Mountaineer wrestlers compete at home, which means it’s the last time the folks of Madison County can rally to their support at home. Should the fans come out for the event, what will they see?

  • GML to host big baseball event

On Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, the Madison County varsity baseball team will host Baseball Night – a ballpark-theme supper, followed by a guest speaker.
