    Welcome Tour de Madison riders

Organizers of this year’s 25thanniversary Tour de Madison deserve applause for the extra efforts they used to make the event special. The silver anniversary edition of the annual group bicycle ride set for this Saturday will offer several firsts. These include a Syria start, rather than a downtown Madison or Wolftown one, a delicious Graves Mountain Lodge lunch and even two live bands.

  • A tale of two tours

Tour de Madison or Tour de France? Let’s compare these epic bicycling events.

  • Madison Question of the Week

    For May 3, 2012

  • Happy 30th anniversary MESA!

We congratulate MESA, based at 534 S. Main St. in downtown Madison, on its three decades of service to Madison County’s less fortunate.

  • School board flunks smell test

It is possible though, to stay within the law, but create what the supervisors’ code of ethics we earlier referenced calls “the appearance of impropriety.” We think that’s what’s happened here. We think, to use a colloquial expression, this doesn’t pass the smell test.

  • B and G Club benefit May 5

There are certain rites of spring which just make me want to skip down the street. These rites are not necessarily the same things that excite most people. Sure, I like tulips, flowering trees and happy bird songs like everyone, but what really makes me smile is the sight of horses leaving their winter coats in a heap and the smell of fresh grass on their breath.

  • MCEF event a huge success

March Madness came to Madison on March 24at Graves Mountain Lodge Pavilion! While the basketball games were broadcast, the guests bid on a wide range of delightful auction items, enjoyed a delicious Graves-prepared dinner and visited with friends and neighbors.

  • Cancer screening saves lives

I am not feeling sorry for myself, I am trying to enjoy each day that God lets me stay here. I have six months to live without treatment and 18 to 24 months if I take chemo. I chose to take the chemo because I have a husband and two children that love me and I want to be with them as long as possible. I have always been health conscious, walking every day, watching weight, low fat, high fiber, but I left out an important test I should have had done -- a colonoscopy. If I had one five to six years ago, they could have caught it in time.

  • Support MPS playground plan

Unstructured, child-directed play has been proven to help kids develop physically, socially and cognitively, yet today’s kids have less time and fewer opportunities to play than any previous generation. The current kindergarten playground at MPS does not meet Head Start or ADA standards, leaving our county’s Head Start and special needs students with no options for outdoor play. A communitywide effort launched in 2011 to build a new playground that offers a safe place to play for all children who use it.

  • Today's tunes: Raunch reigns

It is worth noting, as troubling as this is, that last year the top three pop songs on Billboard magazine’s list featured the F word in the chorus. And, again, it is mostly the females who have the potty-mouths.

  • Support MCEF fund-raiser

SYRIA -- Over the past several months, a dedicated group of people have been busily getting ready for the first annual March Madness fund-raiser for the Madison County Education Foundation. The event promises to be an event that we look forward to each and every year.

  • Daffodil blooms are glorious

This result clearly indicates that native plants will not be decimated by native insects. I’m less certain that the results support the alternate theory that non-native lilacs and crepe myrtles “take space away from something that could be productive” in supporting native insects, as Dr. Tallamy is quoted as saying in a 2008 New York Times book review.

  • Shelter must take aggressive dogs

We would love to save every animal that comes through our doors, but the fact remains that we do not have endless space and resources. “No-kill” shelters are allowed to turn animals away – they can say that they’re full, or decline to accept certain animals. As a county shelter, we have to accept every animal that comes our way, including feral cats and aggressive dogs.

  • 'High-kill' shelter not preferred kind

If you feel a high-kill shelter is not in the best interests of Madison County or the animals housed there, contact the board of supervisors and ask why the shelter is not being run and managed in a more humane manner as outlined in the Operating Procedures amended by the board in 2008.

  • Foreclosures offer challenges

Today, some 500 foreclosed properties -- most of them single-family homes -- can be had at fire sale prices in Culpeper County. Others are available across Virginia, including a handful in Madison County.

  • Criglersville 'fire sale' unwise

Thanks go to the Madison County Board of Supervisors for deciding at its meeting last week to take another look at the county owned property in Criglersville. Folks have been wondering about the long period of official inaction on the 5.7-acre site off Old Blue Ridge Turnpike (Route 670), just across from the Robinson River.

  • Madison youth celebrate art

March is Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs.

  • Syria man: Restrict sludge

If I were a farmer being exposed to sludge, I would think twice in continuing the use of sludge and to expose myself, my family and the community at large to the serious health effects of sludge.

  • Proud of Madison Post Office

I became Madison’s Postmaster in February  2009, and I consider this position to be the highlight of my 35 years with the Postal Service. I started as a letter carrier in 1977 and I have devoted my career to moving the mail and serving my customers. Like you, I have seen a lot of change in the Postal Service over the years, and like you, I am concerned about its future. However, the role I play is local, and that is where I focus my attention

  • Welcome MC citizen input

Madison County residents typically have lots to say about the county’s budget. Unfortunately, they tend to try and speak out only late in the budget formulation process, when things are almost “a done deal.”

  • Monroe fans 'sicken' MC mom

The William Monroe High School Sportsmanship and Code of Ethics is very clear in explaining that “spectators exemplify positive sportsmanship behavior at all times.” The document “insists” on discouraging the use of taunting or derogatory remarks. I was appalled and sickened as I watched and listened to the student fans during the game.

  • Bud cans, dirty diapers unwelcome along MC roads

I’m in Madison County which has some of the state’s most gorgeous (NJ terminology) roads and what do I encounter -- trash! And it seems to me that the situation has gotten much worse recently. I do not want to venture into those “shark-infested” waters of the “hang tag.” I’ll leave those matters to the “Letters to the Editor” section to determine whether the dreaded tag has added to the county’s problem. No, I’ll take the approach of the “20 somethings” and their favorite expression – seriously, who does that!

  • Help MPS playground campaign

With its location next to the athletic fields at Hoover Ridge and the Madison County Farmers Market, the playground at Madison Primary School has become a central gathering place in the community. While it is intended for use by kindergarteners and students of the Head Start program housed at the school during the day, you will see children and families playing there at all times during the evenings and weekends.

  • County should put agendas in paper

I wish to express my feelings concerning the posting of meeting announcements and meeting agendas in the paper. Just posting notices on buildings in the town and people getting this information from the Internet are not enough!

  • MC Senior Center valuable

It may help to know that our senior centers strive to provide programs and activities in each county four days a week to help keep you active and engaged. Staying active, mentally and physically, keeps you stronger and more independent.  Our five local senior centers, operated by Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services (RRCS) are located in the towns of Madison, Culpeper, Warrenton, Orange and Scrabble (Rappahannock County).  They are open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  You can attend as many days per week as you like depending on availability.
