MC schools flu plan hits snags
Madison County Public Schools is still working to offer H1N1 vaccinations to all of its students, but is experiencing a hiccup or two along the way.
Although an initial plan called for students to have had at least one dose of the “swine flu” vaccine by Oct. 29, shortages have prevented this. So far, only students at Madison Primary School have received the vaccination.

MC “unstoppable” in 41-0 win
When the Manassas Park Cougars lined up for Nov. 6 football action vs. Madison County, they stared right into the eyes of a senior running back with something to prove. After sitting out last week against Strasburg, Logan Terrell was both an unstoppable force and an unmovable object as the Mountaineers rolled to a 41-0 win.

Lawmen hunt Uno vandals
Authorities are seeking information on vandals who destroyed a lighted patriotic display on South Blue Ridge Turnpike (Route 231) in Uno Oct. 30 or 31. The display featured an American flag and a military flag.

Local sheriff car buy OK’d
The Madison County Board of Supervisors voted last week to approve a purchase of nine vehicles for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. The unanimous vote came at the supervisors regular Oct. 29 workshop meeting (supervisors Bob Miller and Clark Powers were absent).

Matt Carson missed the candidates forum Monday in downtown Madison because he had the flu, so he returns at 6 tonight for a casual meet-and-greet at the Madison Inn restaurant, 217 N. Main St.

Speedy Malvern solution eludes officials
Malvern residents are still waiting to hear if deputies will be allowed to ticket speeders and enforce other traffic laws there. The delay continues because the Madison County Board of Supervisors wants more information before it schedules a public hearing on the issue. The meeting is likely to be arranged after the next regular supervisors meeting Tuesday, Nov. 10. However, it is not immediately clear what the timeline will be.
Lawmen seek Syria arsonist
Authorities are seeking new leads to solve a Syria arson case from the summer. Several large stacks of firewood near a house at 3022 Weakly Hollow Road (Route 600) in Syria were intentionally set on fire sometime between 4 and 5 a.m. July 10, Madison County Sheriff’s Office Investigor Greg Garrett told The Eagle.
Link MCHS, Food Lion with overpass?
Drivers going from Madison County High School to the Madison (Food Lion) Plaza directly across U.S. 29 could be using an overpass to get there if the Virginia Department of Transportation has its way. A VDOT committee is working on the Route 29 Corridor Study that will include ideas on ways to make the flow of traffic smoother on U.S. 29, according to Project Manager Charles Rasnick. The changes do not meet with everyone’s approval, according to Madison County Board of Supervisors member Bob Miller, who voiced concerns with the plan’s goals in Madison County and its funding.

Carson ill, to miss forum

The two candidates running for delegate to the 30th District of the Virginia General Assembly—Matt Carson and Ed Scott—were scheduled to participate in a candidates forum set for 7 p.m. today, Monday, Oct. 26, in the Madison County Administration Center’s auditorium at 414 N. Main St. in downtown Madison. However, in an e-mail sent to the (Culpeper) Star-Exponent Monday afternoon, Carson’s wife, Heather, said her husband “has officially come down with the flu after knocking on doors and shaking hands for six-plus weeks.”

MC lodging tax hike advances
The Madison County Board of Supervisors is again looking at increasing taxes on tourists and part-time residents staying in Madison County.Proposed legislation previously discussed at a February supervisors meeting, would let the county to raise taxes for visitors who rent rooms or campground spaces in Madison County for less then 30 consecutive days, according to information published by the Madison County Finance Committee. Instead of paying up to two percent taxes on a room at a hotel, motel, bed and breakfast or for a campground space, guests could have to pay up to five percent, Supervisors Chairman Eddie Dean said at the board’s regularly scheduled Oct. 13 meeting.

H1N1 vaccines reach MC
The H1N1, or “Swine Flu,” vaccine has come to the Madison County Health Department. The vaccine has already started to be available in Virginia although it has gone to healthcare workers first, according to the Dana Bradshaw of the Madison County Health Department. “We got a very small initial shipment of one type (of the vaccine),” said Bradshaw. “It was targeted to healthcare workers or emergency medical care workers. However, we are expecting to get an increasing amount on a weekly basis. It will go to the high risk candidates and the schools.”
School flu vaccinations set
The Madison County School Board voted unanimously to work with the Madison County Health Department to provide the H1N1 or “swine flu” vaccine during the school day. The vote came during the board’s regular monthly meeting Oct. 12. The dates proposed will be Friday, Oct. 23 for Madison Primary School and Waverly Yowell Elementary School and Thursday, Oct. 29 for Wetsel Middle School and Madison County High School.

Madison County ventured west to take on a valley foe for the second week in a row and this time the Mountaineers took their attack defense with them. The Mountaineer defense sacked Page County quarterback Dakota Wolf nine times on its way to a 35-6 football win Friday night at Panther Field in Shenandoah.

Malvern reps: Put brakes on speeders
The roads in Madison County’s Malvern community remain a hot topic for residents there. At the Madison County Board of Supervisors workshop meeting last week, Malvern Homeowners Association representatives asked the Madison County Board of Supervisors to help give Malvern’s roads a designation needed to allow sheriff’s deputies to ticket speeders there and perform other types of traffic enforcement currently not possible on the community’s private roads. Although this is not the first time the group has approached supervisors on the issue, not all Malvern residents agree further regulations of Malvern’s roads is the way to go.

MC lawmen uncover pot operation
Authorities discovered a Madison County-based marijuana growing operation Sept. 21, according to a Madison County Sheriff’s Office news release.
The operation, which was in the 2000 block of Leon Road, included an undisclosed number of marijuana plants with a reported street value of $18,000, as well as 1.5 ounces of dry marijuana.

Oct. 5 last day to register
Start with eight candidates running for seats on the Madison County Board of Supervisors, throw in a governor’s race and a delegate’s race, and you may have a recipe for a big turn-out for the upcoming Nov. 3 election, officials say. “Usually we have a good turnout in Madison (County),” said Voter Registrar Diana A. Eanes, adding that 60 percent or higher turnouts are not unheard of in Madison. If you aren’t registered to vote but still want to get in on the action, there is still time, but don’t wait too much longer. Unregistered citizens have until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5 to register.
