MCHS set to graduate 152

School ended for Madison County students June 9, but in the final days of classes many were able to experience educational moments on the more light-hearted side, including, from left, Jennifer Edwards, Kim Finks and Katherine Parker. Madison County High School seniors won’t throw their caps into the air until June 13 but the party leading up to the Class of 2009’s graduation has already started.
While munching on some snacks during lunch last week, MCHS senior Jennifer Edwards barely seemed to notice the dollops of cornstarch wisped across her face nor that her lower legs were covered in the substance.
An end-of-the-year chemistry class experiment had turned into a food fight of sorts, with the seniors rolling up balls of the cornstarch-water mix and playfully striking each other with the sticky stuff.
Earlier that day, Jennifer and a group of her fellow seniors were also involved in a water balloon fight, in the rain.
“It was fun!” said fellow soon-to-be graduate Meghan Chada.
Most likely, teachers wouldn’t typically have tolerated this kind of behavior, but the seniors only had a few days before their high school careers would be over, and the excitement was hard to contain.
“I have one more exam ... . I don’t wanna study but I know I have to to pass the test so I’m kind of stuck,” senior Kristi Aylor said Friday. Kristi already had plans to attend friends’ graduation parties this past weekend – a week before the actual graduation event.
The 2009 high school graduation ceremony – which is set for 10 a.m. une 13 at the Wetsel Middle School gym – will honor approximately 152 graduating seniors, according to MCHS Principal Mike Sisler.
The June 13 graduation event will include speeches presented by the senior class valedictorian and salutatorian, Principal Mike Sisler, Madison County School Board Chairman Jeff Early and Superintendent Brenda Tanner.
Each graduate will receive at least seven guest tickets for entrance to the Wetsel Middle School gym – where the actual ceremony takes place – and some additional tickets to the Madison County High School auditorium where there will be a live video feed.
A mandatory graduation practice – during which students will receive their guest tickets – is set for 10 a.m., Thursday, June 11, at the Wetsel Middle School gym.
Graduating seniors participating in the ceremony must be at the MCHS cafeteria by 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 13. Doors open at 8:45 a.m., handicapped patrons are asked to arrive shortly before this time.
