Make sure you’re registered to vote

On Nov. 4, those of us who are registered will have the opportunity to exercise one of our most cherished freedoms: the right to vote. But we must be properly registered in order to exercise this freedom.
The State Board of Elections has encouraged voter registration campaigns, and we have seen several in Madison County, at the county fair, the street festival and elsewhere. This is good because we want to get as many people registered as we can. However, some of these campaigns have been misleading, telling prospective voters that they are “registering you to vote,” when in fact they are assisting you to apply for registration.
If you filled out an application at one of these campaign booths, this does not mean you are registered. You are not registered to vote until you have received a voter registration card from the county voter registrar.
If you do not have a valid voter registration card with your street address on it and you want to vote, please contact the registrar’s office immediately at (540) 948-6533 or at 302 Thrift Road. The deadline for registering to vote in this November’s election is Monday, Oct. 6.
And please do vote! The thousands of men and women who have served our country and died for our freedom expect you to do so.
