Editor:
This is to my dear Republican friends.
There is a lot of negative post-election information coming out now about the McCain campaign. There are McCain campaign insiders, all deeply devoted Republicans, saying that Gov. Palin was chosen for the wrong reasons and was woefully unprepared to become president or vice president.
I think it would be fun to hang out with Sarah Palin at the hockey rink, watching our kids playing together and chatting; I would enjoy that. However, Fox News, not your hotbed of liberalism, reported that Sarah Palin couldn’t name the NAFTA signators, and thought that Africa was a country!
I should not be president/vice president; and, really, neither should she.
For the Republican Party to have a comeback, those in Republican power positions are going to need to carefully look at some of the dangerous choices they made during this campain. Tellingly, the president of France, upon hearing of Obama’s election, said, “Now America can lead again.”
Scripture tells us “Perfect love casts out fear, and a gentle word turns away wrath.” Instead of anger or fear, which are not faithful responses, let’s pay attention to the actual statistical changes, and other patterns of change in the country. Much was made of Senator Obama’s recommendation to Joe the Plumber that we “spread the wealth.” One only need read the gospels to see the value of that statement. Certainly Obama’s tax plan will help most of the Republicans and Democrats and Independents reading this.
As Americans, we will, of course voice our own divergent opinions, I heartily engage in this! But let’s try to listen carefully to the president-elect’s words, to watch his actions, and to make considered judgements.
Good Republicans will give our new president a chance.
I hope for unity.
