Editor:
In a surprising reversal, long-time libertarian activist Leri Thomas blames the local government for not doing something — in this case, not having a cell phone tower in an area of the county where no one has volunteered to build one. (Cell towers are business driven, not government driven, and only citizen driven where there are enough citizens to make it worth the business’ cost).
What happened to “Mother, I’ll do it myself!” — the holy mantra of libertarianism? LeRoi Moore chose to vacation on a remote farm, chose to ride an ATV. Maybe he treasured the remoteness and was willing to take the risks it entailed. In any case, I’ve heard no evidence that he died because of any delay in treatment, and in fact he died several weeks and thousands of miles from the accident.
Exactly what is the “apathetic oversight” of the board of supervisors’ “sworn duty to protect and defend the people”? Apparently it is the supervisors’ desire that cell towers be smaller and more numerous so as to not interfere with the natural scenic beauty that is our inheritance and that has been protected in Madison County for generations.
Yes, this may delay the building of some cell towers because this option is more expensive for the companies. I’m willing to wait, and I don’t have bars. I don’t want to be muscled by communications companies’ desire to enhance their bottom line or by Leri Thomas’ unfounded accusations and twisted reasoning.
The amazing views and natural beauty of our county can never be restored if we sacrifice them for quick access to city convenience. I appreciate any supervisor’s vigilance toward preserving what makes this place, which we have the good fortune to call home, a daily joy and inspiration.
