On April 3, the Madison County High School Equity and Diversity Committee hosted a Fun Day for students. Its purpose was to provide students with an opportunity to interact with different students than they might normally interact with.
The gym hosted pingpong and basketball, while in the auditorium there was a concert by Marcus Nicholson and Max Malmgren, two of MCHS’ talented musicians. In the cafeteria there were a variety of video games provided by students who brought their own gaming systems to share.
A core group of about 100 students stayed after school to participate in the activities. They were extremely well behaved and had a great opportunity to interact with students whom they do not normally socialize, which was the point of the whole day — to bring students together.
Generous donations by local restaurants not only served to sate the students’ adolescent appetites, but also represented the diversity of food in our area and provided a sense of community. There were sausages and sauerkraut provided by the Bavarian Chef, chicken wings and strips provided by the Mountaineer Cafe, a vegetable platter from the Marriott in Charlottesville, biscuits and apple butter and jam from Graves Mountain Lodge, baked ziti from Giovanna’s, pizza from Two Brothers Pizza and Subs and coleslaw from Pig ’N Steak.
The food was a definite hit with the students and demonstrated that Madison is truly a community that comes together to support its young people. Thanks to these area businesses and thanks to our fine young people and their teachers for making April 3 a truly fun day.
