Government should stop collecting taxes

Editor:

The Democrats in Washington have begun telling us how they propose to “stimulate” our sagging economy. They propose to buy computers for schools and build windmills.

and to enter everyone’s medical records into computers. These proposals may help certain areas within our economy, but they certainly will not stimulate the economy as a whole.

We can do better.

Rep. Gohmert (Texas) has proposed a moritorium on income tax col-lection and payroll tax collection (up to the $800 billion proposed by the Democrats for their economic stimulus plan). The federal government collects $100 billion in income taxes and $60 billion in “payroll taxes” every month.

You divide that $160 billion into $800 billion and you arrive at five months.

Rep. Gohmert’s plan would call for the federal government to not collect taxes for those five months.

The working public would receive its entire paycheck every payday, with no deductions.

And what would the public do with those extra dollars? They would spend that money on things they need and want, like fill their heating oil tank or a new digital TV to replace their old analog TV. And they would be spending a lot of those extra dollars locally, with local businesses.

Doesn’t it make sense to have more money available for spending locally than for the politicians in Washington, D.C. to “target” funds in certain areas? You all know the K Street lobbyists will be jerking the politicians chains to get the money spent where the lobbyists want. That is why there was
such a backlash over the Wall Street bailout plan.

It makes much more sense for there to be more money available everywhere. A local business that sees an increase in business (and does not have to pay taxes for five months) is more likely to not lay off workers, and to look for other areas to save on expenses to increase the viability of their
business.

I urge the working public and local businesses to contact their representative and both senators to promote this plan that allows the working public to keep all of their money and spend it as they see fit — not the way the politicians want to spend the money. The Democrats are going to spend the $800 billion (or more); tell your representative and senators how you want the money spent.
