This letter is about the heating problem at Madison County High School. If they repair anything, it should be to replace the heating system in that school.
When my husband and I would go to parent-teacher conferences, I would feel sorry for the school personnel. I tried to focus on what they were saying, only to find myself freezing along with the teachers. Some rooms were warm, but most of the rooms were not.
Our teachers suffer with colds all through the school year, and I’m sure the students do as well. During our meetings with the teachers, many were wearing their coats – even though we were indoors.
I’ve been to many schools during my school days. Never had I experienced such a cold school as MCHS, except the time in Pennsylvania when the student body decided to conduct a protest in our gym. We sat like Indians on the floor while the principal turned off the heat to try to stop the sit-in. It worked.
When my parents were home missionaries to the Appalachian Mountains, in Kentucky, I would go along with a favorite teacher to help adults and children learn to read. One thing I noticed, the leaders served the folks nutritious food, but first the teachers made sure the coal stove was stoked.
No matter how old or what size a person might be, people need to be kept warm to be able to function in school and learn.
God bless and keep safe and warm.
