Editor:
I have read with interest the recent barrage of letters attacking the intelligence of the people we have hired to conduct the affairs of Madison County. I have great respect for one of the people who wrote the letters, the honorable Dr. Putz. He has been a consistent critic of the regime’s handling of our finances, so I do not suspect him of being politically motivated.
That does not seem to be the case with the others. Methinks they have their eyes on November and the board of supervisors vacancies that will appear on the ballot.
I was at first of the vague opinion that these people were merely reflecting a sign of the times. It would not be unusual for hard times to bring about a scurrying of rodents. But after being reminded of the “November facts,” the more plausible, political explanation took center stage.
It’s not that I have anything against politicking. I suppose it’s a necessary evil. It just seems to me that these wannabes would present a more honest picture of themselves if, instead of belittling the intelligence of our current employees, they would just declare their candidacy. We voters could then better understand their motives.
When I first moved to Madison County I was led to remark that “even its politicians are honest.” I have seen nothing since then to change that opinion. But if my suspicions are correct, and the guys writing those critical letters are actually only office seekers, then I may have to do a reassessment.
