I think it’s great that U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Richmond, is hosting a job fair in Richmond on July 13. But when there are five applicants for each job opening, a lot of people are still going to be without a job at the end of the day.
In this job market, many people are looking for work without success. Meanwhile, out-of-work families have to depend on unemployment benefits to pay the rent or mortgage and keep food on the table.
But next week those unemployment checks will end for many who have been out of work for a while, thanks to Rep. Cantor. He is one of the high-ranking members of the Republican leadership in Congress that led the fight to block extending unemployment insurance benefits and money for summer jobs.
In his job fair announcement Rep. Cantor called for “long-term solutions that will restore the economic strength and vitality of our nation and provide Virginians with access to well-paying jobs.”
When it comes to promoting economic vitality to spur good jobs down the road, what are Rep. Cantor’s ideas? So far he has only said, “no” – no to federal help for states, which means states can’t meet their Medicaid budget obligations without cutting jobs. He has fought against extending emergency assistance for struggling families. He has said no to extending tax breaks for childcare for still-working families.
I think it’s time Rep. Cantor stopped getting in the way of economic recovery and got on the side of families and communities struggling to get back on their feet.
