Editor:
As the parent of a Madison County senior boys basketball player, I am looking forward to Senior Night when Madison County plays Manassas Park.
I know it will be very different from the Friday night game when Madison played William Monroe at William Monroe. The Dragons won the game, but what I will really remember is the unbecoming conduct of the student fans.
The William Monroe High School Sportsmanship and Code of Ethics is very clear in explaining that “spectators exemplify positive sportsmanship behavior at all times.” The document “insists” on discouraging the use of taunting or derogatory remarks. I was appalled and sickened as I watched and listened to the student fans during the game.
In the words of my son, “It’s awesome to have a huge student section, but when you chant ‘overrated’ every time the District Player of the Year touches the ball, ‘Jackie Chan,’ when you become annoyed with the school spirit of an opposing fan who happens to be of Asian descent, and ‘Stop your crying’ when opponents complain about fouls, yet your own players argue even the most obvious fouls …”
Where is the self-discipline and responsibility that are the life lesson goals of academic athletics?
Please consider what I have said, William Monroe student fans and parents, as we get ready for District, Regional and State Playoffs.
