Something’s missing in the Madison County football team’s fieldhouse. The 2009 Mountaineers finished with a record of 9-2 and an appearance in the Region B semi-finals, racking up 2,134 yards in the rushing game and holding opponents to 12.5 points per game. But something was still missing. Something that has the 2010 squad on a mission to rectify.
Madison County’s Mountaineers go back on the trail for their first regular season football match-up, traveling to Fluvanna County Sept. 3 to face a team that gave Madison County an early test last season.

Abbie White, despite such remarkable progress, still has a very long road of recovery facing her. Since many of our athletes on the volleyball team are her closest friends, we have decided to have our benefit games versus Fluvanna County on Aug. 18 in Abbie’s honor. There will be a brief presentation about Abbie before the 7:15 p.m. varsity game by our players. Admission for the game is $5 and donations to Abbie’s recovery will be accepted. Furthermore, all concession stand proceeds from the game (courtesy of the Madison Booster Club) will go to Abbie and her family.
Life is continually a work in progress. For Madison County Primary School physical education teacher Ben Breeden, this concept remains true both on and off the basketball court. Breeden, his wife, Maggie Breeden, along with couple’s two boys, Dean Breeden, 5, and Bryce Breeden, 4, have just finished building and moving into a new house. However, that has only created new projects for the active coach.
Madison County High School Athletic Director Phil Warren this week announced the try-out times for the various Mountaineer fall sports.
Midway through the regular season I knew I would write a season-ending tribute to this year’s Madison County girls soccer team. I struggled only with what my opening premise would be. Then, one day, it came to me. The team reminds me of the cast of characters on the original television series known as “Charlie’s Angels,” which debuted in 1976.
A historic season came to an end last Friday when Madison County’s girls soccer team lost in the Group A state semi-finals to Radford, 5-2. Radford’s Lexi Denny scored a hat trick and teammates Pip Pattison and Lindsi Sparks one goal each, while Madison’s Lindsay Wheeler scored an early first-half goal and Ivy Jacobs a late second-half one to account for Madison’s scoring
