Madison County's Logan Terrell had a tremendous game Feb. 25 and was the only player to hit double digits, scoring 23 points against George Mason’s zone defense.
George Mason knew what it was fighting for when it invaded the Madison County hardwood Wednesday night. The Mountaineers had corraled the Mustangs twice already this season and Mason had barely slipped it into the quarter-finals of the Region B tournament for a third chance at the undefeated Mountaineers.
But when George Mason came out Feb. 25, the Mustangs surprised nearly the entire Wetsel Middle School gym crowd by leading the majority of the first quarter and forcing the Mountaineers to rally for a 59-44 victory.
Madison responded and went on a quick run at the end of the first quarter to make the score 14-13 in favor of the Mountaineers. The Mustangs never regained the lead as Madison won its 25th consecutive game.
Logan Terrell had a tremendous game for the Mountaineers and was the only player to hit double digits, scoring 23 points against George Mason’s zone defense.
“I think Logan Terrell went right tonight,” Madison Coach Tim Taylor said. “He was ready to play and we were ready for that 1-3-1 that they had and I think we executed offensively pretty well.”
Along with Terrell, a couple of other Mountaineers had solid game. Senior Sam Utz finished with eight points and junior Matt Garr six.
Now through the quarter-finals, the Mountaineers will play Buckingham County at 7 p.m. Friday in Madison. The Knights were the last team to beat the top-ranked Mountaineers. Buckingham knocked Madison out of the regional tournament a year ago.
“Buckingham will be a rematch of last year so it will be a lot of fun,” Taylor said.
