Madison County’s boys basketball team rolled to 13-0 last week as it began district play against two teams it lost to last year. But the Mountaineers remained undefeated when they beat district rivals George Mason and Manassas Park. The wins were good enough to rank the squad No. 1 in the state, according to the polls on the prep Web site www.virginiapreps.com.

Madison opened its district play this season against George Mason in Fairfax. Madison won 56-45 over the Mustangs.

The Mountaineers’ Logan Terrell, who had not had a game where he did not score double digits, was held to 5 points all game. He did however pull in 16 rebounds to help the team defensively.

David Falk also played well with 8 points and seven rebounds in the game.

“This was a quality road win against a quality Mason team,” said Madison Coach Tim Taylor. “Both teams played hard and we were able to make some plays in the third quarter to take control of the game. Jerel Carter was awesome tonight. He put this team on his shoulders and carried us.”

Madison also played Manassas Park later in the week and won big 69-44. Terrell had 21 points and Carter had 15 in the game to help the Mountaineers win big in the game.

Madison has certainly played well thus far as they get into the heat of the Bull Run District play.

Madison has two double-A match-ups left against Monticello on Saturday and Fluvanna County on Tuesday. Both are at home.

“The Monticello and Fluvanna games are big in the fact they are double-A teams and will allow us to gauge where we are against quality competition,” Taylor said.

Overall, Madison has been doing terrific at playing as a team as well according to Taylor. “Our overall depth as a team. We have had seven different players scored double figures this year and regularly put four players in double digits,” he said,. “We take each game as an opportunity to get better as a team and improve in certain areas. The undefeated season would be a bonus but that is not our ultimate goal. There are plenty of examples for me to use for the team — the New England Patriots or more recently UNC basketball and Alabama football,” he added.

Madison and Monticello battle it out Saturday at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity -- and the varsity plays following that one.

Monticello is a great team and I am sure there will be quality basketball Saturday night,” Taylor said. “We would love to see a great ‘whiteout’ crowd Saturday night.”

Madison is now 13-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Bull Run District.
