Madison County’s boys basketball team is now perched at a lofty 18-0 after getting big wins last week over their last Group 2-AA Jefferson District opponent in Fluvanna County and also wins over Bull Run District foe Strasburg and over Group-A opponent Luray. The Mountaineers remain No. 1 in the Associated Press Group-A basketball poll, this week receiving nine of the votes for the No. 1 spot. Coach Tim Taylor’s crew has not lost this spot since the poll began earlier in the season.

Saturday, Madison battled Luray and came away still on top in what proved to be a 77-41 stomping. Big Blue’s David Falk led the way with 13 points. His fellow Mountaineers Jerel Carter, Sam Utz and Matt Garr each had 8 points to add to the win.

Then Friday, Madison flushed Fluvanna to go to 8-0 against the Group 2-A Jefferson District opponent with a 57-34 win. Madison’s Logan Terrell had a team high 17 points in the win. David Falk also had 16. Matt Garr had arguably his best game and his best week, getting 14 points in the Madison-Fluvanna match-up alone.

Overall, Madison played well in the game but still had some issues with completing passes and giving easy turnovers to the Flucos.

Madison also played Strasburg last Tuesday in Ram country. The valley match-up was also more sloppy than most for the Mountaineers, with passes not finding the target’s hands, as well as avoidable turnovers coming to light. But the team still came away with the win – and a big one at that — 51-28. Terrell also had a huge game with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Jerel Carter added 15 points.

At press time, Madison is 18-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Bull Run District. The Mountaineers tried to corral George Mason’s Mustangs last night and will try to skin Manassas Park’s Panthers Friday night.

Madison plays at Clarke County in another big game and will try to pluck the surging Eagles in Feb. 4 match-up in Berryville.
